To Workout or Not on Vacation??? By Jen McSorley

Even though we hate to admit it, summer will be coming to end in a matter of weeks.  With that said, many of us will be taking our last official summer vacations and if you are anything like my husband and I, working out is a part of our everyday routine.  Even our “rest’ days are active!  So, what do you do when it is time to go on vacation?  Do you workout or do you truly take a vacation?  For us, we still workout every day, whether it be at the resort gym or adapting the workout to our surroundings (i.e. beach runs/walks, kayaking, biking, hiking, etc.).  You can even use an IPad or IPhone app to get your workouts!  No more excuses!  They can be done anywhere and do not cost a penny!

Yes, the vacation temptation exists in the form of all-you-can-eat buffets, poolside daiquiris, endless desserts, etc., but you can sneak in a good workout to counteract all of the other vacation temptations!  Believe me, we definitely indulge when we are on vacation!

Here are a few vacation friendly workouts!

Beach Walking or Running:

3 – 5 miles brisk walking in the sand (or run if you desire!) Walking on the sand burns more calories than walking on flat ground.  Some experts suggest that you can burn twice as many calories walking in soft sand.

Circuit Training:  Do each exercise for 30 seconds with a 15 second break in between.

Push-ups

Alternating rows with a resistance band

Speed skaters

Squat Jumps

Inch Worm

Chest Press with a resistance band around a beam

Mountain Climbers

Alternating lunges

Burpees

Bicep curls with a resistance band

Tricep kickbacks with a resistance band

Defensive Slide

But Kickers

Take a short break and repeat the circuit

Circuit Training:  Count by Rep

Exercise set 1

Push-ups (15)
Squat and row (15)
Alternate reverse lunge (15 each leg)
Ski hops (15)

Exercise set 2

Squat thrust (15)
Swimmers using a band (15)
Alternate Lateral lunge (15 each leg)
Speed skaters (15)

Exercise set 3

Walk hands out and back (10)
Robinhood row (15 each arm)
Screamer lunges (15 each leg)
Squat jumps (15)

Getting away from reality is good for the soul, and getting away from the usual workout routine is good for the body. By freeing yourself from your routine, you open your mind to new ways to move your body, have fun and keep your body fit while you’re on vacation.   And as always…enjoy your vacation!
